Yale University seeks an experienced and successful manager to join the university’s division of Alumni Affairs and Development. As a senior member of the Yale Alumni Fund (YAF) team and reporting to the Managing Director, the Deputy Director directs a team of individuals responsible for marketing, broad engagement, and mass solicitation as well as the integrated direct marketing strategy that supports all Yale Alumni Fund efforts and plays a central role in helping to achieve annual fundraising goals, engagement goals, and prospect pipeline goals. The Deputy Director provides internal counsel to senior colleagues during the annual strategic planning process and identifies new strategies and tools for implementation. Through analysis of results and micro and macro data review, the Deputy Director determines best practices, strategies and segmentations for solicitation and engagement of a diverse group of Yale constituencies including undergraduate, graduate school, and professional school alumni. The Deputy Director evaluates current tools and technologies and makes recommendations for changes to ensure they are being used to their fullest potential. They will be adept at problem solving, collaborating with colleagues to achieve results, receptive to feedback and new and creative ideas, and able to quickly change tactics based on trends and current results. Essential Duties: 

  • Direct the members of the team responsible for marketing, broad engagement, and mass solicitation as well as the integrated direct marketing strategy that supports all Yale Alumni Fund efforts.
  • Manage a team inclusive of different types of positions and levels, provide coaching and oversee individual goal setting and performance management for all team members.
  • Define and build best practices based on analysis of current trends and results.
  • Strategically execute projects through all solicitation and engagement channels.
  • Liaise and collaborate with other Alumni Fund colleagues and those in other units including the Yale Alumni Association and the Marketing and Communications team to develop strategies and sustainable annual plans with the result of boosting current results and building a robust donor pipeline.
  • Liaise and collaborate with Advancement Systems and ITS colleagues to implement and sustain technological resources, using those technologies to their fullest potential to drive results. Represent and guide partners on use of tools and technologies.
  • Stay informed and current on new fundraising and engagement strategies to maximize the effectiveness of Alumni Fund tactics and tools. Make data informed decisions about tactics, messaging, segmentation, etc.
  • Create internal protocols and procedures to ensure efficiencies and consistency across all university partners.
  • Monitor and recommend strategies to ensure a realistic and sustainable internal workload.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and seven or more years of related work experience in an academic, non-profit, or marketing institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in managing/leading a varied team of professionals.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Demonstrated accomplishment in managing a wide range of fundraising, marketing, or stewardship activities. Conversant in current technology and tools in order to supervise staff and a broader group of users including subject matter experts.
  • Proven ability to mentor and guide staff to collaborate with colleagues and execute strategies and long-term projects. Demonstrated ability in leading, coaching and motivating other professionals. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Possesses excellent written, oral and presentation skills. Experience synthesizing and prioritizing information from a wide array of sources while maintaining attention to detail and effectively managing workflow. Excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to improve business practices and processes.
  • Proactive, productive team contributor with a positive attitude. Commitment to an inclusive workplace. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).
