Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving

The Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving is charged with increasing and retaining support from Whitman alumni and families through annual gifts to the College. The Assistant/Associate Director will manage the extensive volunteer program, which consists of alumni and family volunteers. The Assistant/Associate Director has primary responsibility for organizing, operating, providing logistics, materials and reports for alumni and family fundraising volunteer programs. The Office of Annual Giving educates alumni, families, friends, staff/faculty and current students about the importance of the six focus areas of The Whitman Fund: Greatest Need; Scholarships & Student Aid; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Internships; Sustainability and Academic Excellence. This position will collaborate with colleagues campus-wide to build a strong culture of philanthropy throughout the Whitman community.

Principle Accountabilities: 

  • Manages the alumni and family fundraising volunteer programs, which includes recruiting and training volunteers, communicating with volunteers on a monthly basis with fundraising updates and assisting volunteers with their outreach to Whitman constituents in asking for gifts to The Whitman Fund.
  • Creates and tracks fundraising goals for alumni and family volunteers and be able to communicate progress with stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Annual Giving team and the Director of Alumni Relations to plan workshops and training sessions for the annual Volunteer Summit.
  • Uses, troubleshoots and trains volunteers in volunteer management software.
  • Maintains online volunteer resources page to help recruit, onboard and engage volunteers.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Alumni Relations, plans two annual meetings of the Family Leadership Council.
  • Communicates with volunteers to provide fundraising and college updates.
  • Assists with large Annual Giving projects, including days of giving.
  • Assists the Director of Annual Giving in email solicitations.

  • Skill in developing and implementing project plans that are longitudinal and complex in nature.

  • The assistant director should have the ability to learn fundraising and volunteer best practices, particularly in alumni and family giving programs. The associate director should have knowledge of volunteer best practices, particularly in alumni and family giving programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a focus on communicating the importance of philanthropy and alumni and family giving.
  • Skill in using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and donor databases and highly adaptable to changing technologies.
  • Knowledge of modern data management practices and techniques that lead to data driven decisions.
  • Ability and commitment to support, respect and work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends and travel.

Assistant Director Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree

Assistant Director Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Thorough understanding of the value of a residential liberal arts and sciences education and ability to articulate that understanding.
  • One to three years of professional experience in fundraising, donor relations, public relations, or sales; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Associate Director Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and four or more years of professional experience in fundraising, donor relations, public relations, or sales; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Associate Director Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Thorough understanding of the value of a residential liberal arts and sciences education and ability to articulate that understanding.

Working Conditions: 

  • Occasional nights and weekends.
  • Infrequent travel
  • Ability to work in an open office environment, with 20 – 40% weekly hybrid work.

Hiring Salary Range: 

  • Successful applicants qualifying for the Assistant Director position can expect to start between $44,000 and $50,000 per year.
  • Successful applicants qualifying for the Associate Director position can expect to start between $57,930 and $64,965 year.
