Associate Director of Advancement, University Libraries and University Initiatives Annual Fund

Washington University seeks an advancement professional for the position of Associate Director of Advancement supporting University Libraries and Annual Fund efforts of the University Initiatives interdisciplinary programs. As part of the University Initiatives/Libraries Advancement team, this person will help to advance the mission of the university by encouraging a culture of philanthropy among alumni, students, faculty, parents, and friends. The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director of Advancement focus on building meaningful relationships; managing a caseload of prospects (75% Libraries, 25% University Initiatives Annual Fund); increasing support for the University Libraries, Washington University interdisciplinary programs, and other university priorities; and working in collaboration with and in support of colleagues across University Advancement. The Associate Director manages the Annual Fund effort and the Eliot Society volunteer committee for University Libraries as well as partner with program directors of the Institute for Public Health, Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and the Institute for School Partnership. The Associate Director focuses on qualifying and cultivating Annual Fund donors. This position includes visits with prospective and current donors in St. Louis and travel to territories in support of the Libraries and interdisciplinary programs. The Associate Director of Advancement reports to the Director of Advancement for University Libraries.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Manage a caseload of 60-80 prospects, focused on qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting annual gift donors. Support the Director of Advancement for University Libraries in their work with major gift prospects. Manage in-kind donations.
  • Manage Libraries Annual Fund effort and Libraries Eliot Society committee volunteers. Assist with related data and logistics for the University Initiatives programs to include Institute for Public Health, Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and the Institute for School Partnership Annual Fund effort and the program Eliot Society committees. Coordinate Annual Fund appeals with Annual Giving Programs for UI programs and Libraries.
  • Coordinate stewardship efforts for Libraries, including weekly acknowledgments and annual endowment impact reporting.
  • Manage bi-monthly Libraries’ Eliot Society members-only events (virtual, hybrid, and in-person), from event development to execution with Libraries’ staff and donors. Coordinate Libraries’ use of the Advancement webinar license and related planning/execution needs. Undertake special projects and assignments to advance the mission of Washington University.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree.
  • Three to five years of fundraising experience with a track record of successful solicitations or related experience.
  • Project leadership skills, with value placed on organizational loyalty, commitment, pride, integrity, mutual respect, and collegial openness.
  • Development experience in a complex university environment.
  • Deep appreciation for and ability to articulate the mission and goals of Washington University, with particular emphasis on sharing stories about the impact, collections, and expertise of Washington University Libraries and its staff.
  • Desire to play a meaningful role in the University community and to share in its commitment to research and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for individual giving.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies within a complex organization.
  • A strong work ethic with the capacity to work independently and collaboratively on a team.
  • Ability to listen carefully, learn quickly, and work effectively with both internal and external constituencies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with high net worth individuals, volunteers, Libraries staff, and Advancement colleagues.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Creative problem solving and project management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of related experience

Salary Range: 

$55,600.00 – $94,900.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
