The Associate Director of Leadership Annual Giving, Academic Health Sciences (“The Annual Giving Officer”) has responsibility for discovering, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting leadership annual giving donors, as well as building on the pipeline of major gift donors. The Annual Giving Officer will focus on soliciting gifts for the Academic Health Sciences, which includes the UVM Larner College of Medicine, the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the UVM Medical Center, the UVM Children’s Hospital, and the UVM Cancer Center. The position reports to the Executive Director of Annual Giving, Academic Health Sciences.

Essential Functions

  • Cultivate and solicit leadership annual giving donors ($2,500+) supporting the Academic Health Sciences at UVM. This includes personal solicitations as well as the development and execution of fundraising strategies and programs for AHS annual funds and other organizational priorities. Identify major gift prospects and partner with prospect management in referring prospects from annual giving to the major gifts team as appropriate. Partner with key faculty and healthcare providers as needed (75%)
  • Identify and qualify new prospects from alumni and grateful patient population, partnering closely with prospect management. Work with the Annual Giving and Alumni Relations teams to leverage key volunteers to assist in the identification and cultivation of donor prospects. Cultivate and solicit new prospects and/or recommend referrals to prospect management for major gift assignment as appropriate (25%)

The Annual Giving Officer will utilize mail, email, phone, virtual calls and face-to-face visits to connect with individuals and will be required to meet specific standards of performance that will be captured as metrics in an annual business plan and will be clearly documented in the appropriate database.

This is a new position; percentages referenced above are estimates and may shift as the program evolves and matures.

Minimum Skills & Abilities

  • Exceptional people skills with the ability to be insightful, responsive, creative and engaging.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion, combined with the ability to meaningfully apply those principles to strategy development and implementation.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills.
  • Fundraising experience, preferably within the higher education and health sectors, with strong skills in both one-to-one cultivation and solicitation and fundraising marketing.
  • Experience working within a complex fundraising CRM/database.
  • The ability to work independently and be self-motivated in initiating contacts with donors and potential donors; maintain relationships in person and long distance.
  • Team-oriented style and a deep desire to collaborate with others.
  • Travel on a frequent basis and willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed. A valid driver’s license is necessary.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Experiences & Abilities

  • Experience/proficiency working with Raiser’s Edge and/or Advance.
  • An understanding of the dynamics of academic medicine including education, clinical care, and research.
  • Ability to navigate complex fundraising landscape, communicating with staff, donors, and professional advisors representing multiple organizations (specifically UVM Foundation, University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Medical Center).

Minimum Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree and at least 1 year of successful annual giving and/or sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities can be demonstrated.

Preferred Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of successful annual giving fundraising and/or direct marketing sales experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skill, and abilities have been developed. Demonstrated strong working knowledge of annual giving strategies within a complex annual giving and major gifts environment, and knowledge and understanding of tax laws affecting charitable giving .
