Position Overview:

The Development Officer will report directly to the Assistant Vice President of Advancement & Chief Marketing Officer and is responsible for developing, managing, and implementing a comprehensive development plan to include annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, campaign, alumni giving, prospect and donor analysis, cultivation and stewardship.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the AVPA to formulate and implement University fundraising goals.
  • Personally manage a comprehensive portfolio of annual and major gift prospects for personal contact on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Conduct face-to-face cultivation and solicitation visits with prospects and donors.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and secure major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Manage donor acknowledgement, recognition and stewardship; responsible for the timely and personalized acknowledgement of all contributions.
  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute special visits and events with donors.
  • Provide support and stewardship to KGI Board members as directed by the AVPA.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications staff to create solicitation and marketing materials to communicate fundraising needs internally and externally.
  • Work with Alumni Director and AVP of Corporate Partnerships to coordinate strategic giving, friend raising and annual giving campaigns.
  • Develop and manage an annual budget and financial reporting for development activities in partnership with the AVPA.
  • Coordinate and plan prospect and donor fundraising and recognition events, including the cultivation and solicitation of sponsorships and targeted attendance at each function.
  • Help direct donor prospect research in support of annual and major giving; identify individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations that have potential to make gifts to KGI.
  • Serve as a representative of KGI as directed, performing other duties as assigned by the AVPA.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with an active list of 225-250 prospective donors.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for assigned major gift prospects.
  • Serve as the primary development office liaison for all assigned college(s), unit(s), and projects to identify major gift prospects and develop appropriate solicitation strategies to secure support for priority initiatives and needs.
  • Manage contact with donors and prospects, including 12-15 monthly visits as well as other types of meaningful contacts.
  • Prepare donor proposals and gift agreements, as necessary.
  • Create and file contact reports, in accordance with office policy, to track moves with assigned prospects.
  • Identify and develop plans for new fundraising initiatives

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to establish and develop productive and collegial relationships, collaboration and the ability to communicate with various constituencies (e.g., staff, faculty, students, managers and visitors) are needed.
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information and records, along with the ability to commit to the highest ethical standards is necessary.
  • Ability to effectively multitask and produce accurate professional work products under demanding timelines.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel independently and work extended workdays and periodic weekends as needed to meet institutional goals.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, banking and finance, or related academic discipline. Five years of fundraising or corporate sales experience or experience in a related field. Experience in managing an annual giving program, capital campaign management, major gifts, and fundraising with foundations and corporations. Candidates should have demonstrated individual success in development campaigns, securing gifts and donor solicitation.

Physical Requirements:

This is generally a sedentary role; it requires the ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and the manual dexterity to operate a computer for prolonged periods of time.  Must be able to lift 25 lbs., and move tables (set up events) as necessary, ability to drive locally and travel by airplane nationally.  Occasionally, will be required to stand for prolonged periods of time at activities/events on and off-campus.  Must be able to handle flexible hours, including some evening and weekend work to meet the needs of the department.
