Job Description:

The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development is appointed by and reports to the Dean of the Law School.  This position has overall responsibility for building strong and effective external relationships that support the objectives of the Law School.

The Associate Dean oversees the Alumni and Development staff of fifteen, with leadership responsibilities in these areas: Advancement Services; Alumni & Constituent Programs; Annual Giving; and Major / Principal Gifts.

This position is charged with leading the successful conclusion of the Law School’s current fundraising campaign, which is part of Duke University’s comprehensive Duke Forward campaign.  This role serves ex officio on the Law School Campaign Executive Committee, the Faculty / Student Committee for Alumni & Development as well as the Nominating and Development sub-committees of the Board of Visitors.  The Associate Dean is also a member of the Duke University Development Cabinet, working closely with the Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development and other senior members of the University alumni relations and development staff.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development is responsible for both strategic and tactical leadership in the following areas:

  1. Staff Management (30%). The Associate Dean must make sure all staff in the Alumni and Development Office fully understand the Law School’s programs and priorities, and that they understand and fulfill their responsibilities as members of an interdependent, collaborative team that includes both the Alumni and Development Office staff and other members of the Law School and Duke communities.
  2. Analysis and Planning (20%). The Associate Dean has responsibility to lead annual and long-range planning for alumni relations and fundraising, consistent with the Law School’s Strategic Plan.  This includes overseeing the preparation of the necessary analyses, reports, and other documents required to maintain strategic, effective alumni relations efforts and to set and meet aggressive fundraising goals.
  3. Development and Cultivation (25%). The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development will direct the Law School’s efforts to substantially increase both current and deferred giving to the Law School endowment, to current-use restricted purposes, and to the unrestricted Annual Fund.  The Associate Dean is responsible for guiding the expansion of the base of support to the Law School to include increased numbers of alumni, corporations, foundations, parents and friends of the School; for expanding the system for researching potential donors; for maintaining effective cultivation strategies to build the relationships that will result in giving to the School; and for ensuring that donors are appropriately thanked and recognized.
  4. Volunteer Management (10%).  The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development is responsible for overseeing or having regular interaction with members of the Law School’s volunteer leadership groups, including the Board of Visitors, the Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, regional alumni clubs, and for assigning and supervising staff to manage the subcommittees of these groups.
  5. Alumni Relations and Special Events (5%). The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development will oversee, in collaboration with the Director of Alumni & Constituent Programs, the planning and implementation of alumni events – social and academic, on-campus and off. The Associate Dean will ensure that all activities are conducted at a consistently high standard that will support the fundraising efforts of the school and reinforce the image and presence of Duke University School of Law among the preeminent law schools in the world.
  6. Collaboration (5%). The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development is responsible for maintaining close collegial relationships with the senior administrative team of the Law School so that the objectives for each of the areas (academic affairs, student affairs, international studies, admissions, career services, communications, and library and informational technologies) can be incorporated into the work of Alumni and Development.  The Associate Dean must ensure that each administrative area is accurately and fully represented in fundraising efforts, alumni activities, and general outreach to the external community.  In addition, the Associate Dean will work closely with the Dean to execute fundraising and alumni relations efforts that make the most effective use of the Dean’s time.
  7. Financial Management (5%). The Associate Dean for Alumni and Development has overall responsibility for the integrity of financial data within the Alumni and Development Office, including budget development, expense tracking, and gift reporting.

 

Education/Training:

Candidates for this position should hold a master’s level degree or higher.

Experience:

Candidates for this position should possess high-level experience in fund raising or other experience that demonstrates the capacity to direct a comprehensive development and alumni relations program.
