Director of Interdisciplinary Development
The Director of Interdisciplinary Development’s role is to organize and facilitate the engagement and collaboration of development colleagues in raising funds to support interdisciplinary programs. The Director will be an expert in residence and developing that expertise will require frequent interaction with and guidance to the directors and staffs of the programs. S/he will:
- provide strategic direction for developing and implementing fundraising and volunteer and board engagement best practices and processes across these programs;
- serve as a content expert for fundraisers, drawing on the priorities of academic leadership;
- serve as an internal and external development liaison;
- manage a suite of consulting and education services offered to internal partners; and
- work closely with fundraisers – and, in particular, the Major and Leadership Gifts team in Alumni Engagement and Development – to facilitate fundraising and development strategy to raise dollars for interdisciplinary programs, with particular focus on University Institutes and Centers (UIC) and non-school based fundraising units.
To achieve these core responsibilities, s/he will work closely with faculty leadership and development colleagues to develop integrated strategies in support of Duke’s varied but interlinked interdisciplinary programs.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Major and Leadership Gifts, the Director of Interdisciplinary Development will coordinate closely with the AVP on priority setting, collaboration with academic leadership, and staff deployment. S/he will also work closely with a wide variety of stakeholders, including the office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies (VPIS), academic and administrative leadership of UIC’s and non-school based fundraising units, Regional Development Directors, and partner staff embedded within UICs.
Responsibilities
Develop and Lead Fundraising Planning
- With the AVP for Major and Leadership Giving, maintain and expand upon a successful collaboration with the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Provost aimed at prioritizing interdisciplinary fundraising needs and integrating them appropriately with school-based efforts.
- Maintain and optimize the existing success of interdisciplinary fundraising – grounding it with best practices, collaborative processes, and performance metrics, including close attention to the evolving priorities for interdisciplinary fundraising across Duke.
- Develop and maintain relationships with faculty directors of UICs and interdisciplinary programs, meeting with them regularly and serving as a senior development counsel for fundraising strategy and, as appropriate, establish best practices and strategy for board management and recruitment, donor stewardship, and other development-related efforts.
Implement Fundraising Strategies
- Work closely with AED fundraisers so they are kept apprised of UIC and unit-based priorities, fundraising needs, and board recruitment strategies, as well as how these all relate to wider university priorities and development efforts.
- Serve as a consultant and partner in prospect strategy development.
- Ensure that interdisciplinary goals and programs are contextualized and communicated within AED and to fundraisers across campus.
- Partner with the campaign team in AED to develop communication strategies that place UICs and non-school based units in a campaign context. As appropriate, identify emerging interdisciplinary collaborations or projects that lend themselves to greater institutional framing.
- Work closely with AED department heads and school-based associate deans, where appropriate, to identify opportunities for collaboration and develop a shared understanding of mutual service provision.
- Assist with proposal writing and communication pieces. Work with the Development Communications team, and communication directors for initiatives, to produce appropriate collateral materials for internal and external use.
- Push out information and prospect names to fundraisers to accelerate fundraising, concentrating particularly on working with the Major & Leadership Gifts team.
Fundraising
Travel and meet with initiative prospects occasionally, within the parameters of the University’s prospect management system.
General Administrative & Management Duties
- As appropriate, serve as a development resource for interdisciplinary inquiries, providing counsel and access to University Development resources.
- Supervise the Program Coordinator for Interdisciplinary Development.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of seven years fundraising experience, preferably in major gifts for an academic environment. Demonstrated leadership, analytical, organizational and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Inquisitiveness about the evolution of interdisciplinary research, education, and civic engagement across all divisions of knowledge. Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines and work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with all levels of academic, professional, technical, and administrative staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program.
Experience
Work requires seven years experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in general fund raising activities and proposal development. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
