The Director of Development plays a vital role in advancing the mission and strategic priorities of the School and strengthening the culture of philanthropy among parents, alumni, and the School’s extended community. The Director of Development will manage the day-to-day activities of the Development and Alumni Engagement Offices, solicit and steward major and leadership donors, and lead the Development Committee with the Associate Head of School for Advancement. He/she will support the execution of a comprehensive and effective development program to include annual giving, alumni engagement, advancement services, operations and stewardship, special campaign logistics, and volunteer activities. This position is a key partner with the Associate Head of School for Advancement and Head of School in creating and executing the overall development program, as well as in planning and coordinating special strategic philanthropic initiatives at the School. The work of this position will be rooted in a deep appreciation and understanding of the School’s mission and the ability to articulate its values and vision internally and externally to achieve strategic results.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership and major donors to achieve desired results to advance School priorities and accomplish overall fundraising goals.
  • Oversee and support day-to-day development and alumni engagement activities to include Advancement Services and Operations, Annual Giving, Alumni and Parent Engagement, Events, and Special Campaign Coordination.
    • Cultivate a positive and supportive office culture, providing mentorship and guidance to a professional staff.
  • Create and coordinate logistics for new or current major and leadership giving initiatives, to include prospect tracking, moves management and volunteer support.
  • Provide regular reports on development activities.
  • Collaborate on initiatives and decisions related to overall program direction, strategies, and fundraising goals.
  • Liaise with faculty, division directors, Parents’ Association, Alumni Board of Directors and other internal and external stakeholders on matters related to development and engagement.
  • Lead the Development Committee with the Associate Head of School for Advancement.

Essential Skills:

  • 7+ years of related experience in development, with preference for 5+ years of management experience plus knowledge of and appreciation for leadership, major and campaign giving.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Creative thinking and demonstrated ability to affect growth in desired results.
  • Attention to detail, with an ability to analyze data, segment donor lists, and produce giving reports.
  • Consummate, positive team player comfortable working with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated analytical and fund-raising skills with the ability to recognize opportunities, identify critical, high pay-off activities and prioritize them to attain goals.
  • Collegial and effective work with fellow administrators, volunteers, and boards.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership that inspires and motivates others.
  • Ability to set goals and direct the efforts of staff and hold individuals accountable for the accomplishments of said objectives.
  • Thorough grasp of the current trends in development, alumni and external engagement.
  • Experience working within comprehensive fundraising campaigns is a plus.
  • Strong interest in K-12 education generally, and St. Anne’s-Belfield School more specifically.

Education and experience:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Experience:

Office environment with frequent interruptions. Occasional weekend and evening work expected.
