Director of Annual Giving
Harvey Mudd College is on a mission to educate the next generation of thoughtful, responsible scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. We are looking for a dynamic, experienced professional to fill the position of Director of Annual Giving. This person will support the College’s mission by working with alumni, parents, and friends to increase philanthropic contributions to the College. This is a regular full-time, benefits-eligible, position that reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development. Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications.
Summary of Job Responsibilities:
As part of the College Advancement team at Harvey Mudd College, the Director of Annual Giving (Director) works in a collaborative team environment to identify, cultivate, and solicit alumni, parents, students, and friends and oversees a strategic program inclusive of direct mail, email, and social media, often in partnership with the Office of Communications and Marketing, to enable the College to achieve its annual fundraising goals. The Annual Giving Office is specifically focused on unrestricted giving (Annual Fund) but serves as a resource for other campaigns.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Development (AVP), the Director manages a team of direct reports, currently the Assistant Director of Annual Giving and the Annual Giving Coordinator. The Director maintains a substantial portfolio of approximately 50 leadership annual giving prospects and partners with major gift officers to provide critical coordination for efforts that combine annual and leadership giving to effectively contribute to HMC’s long-term success and sustainability, particularly as it relates to upgrading unrestricted annual gifts. The Director also cultivates, solicits, recruits, and works with key volunteers, including reunion class volunteers and the Alumni Association Board of Governors’ Annual Fund Committee, for whom s/he is the staff liaison.
The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for increasing both the level of participation and overall dollars contributed to the Annual Fund each year, especially by its leadership donor pool ($1,000+), and for helping to establish and achieve goals each fiscal year.
The Director will assess programmatic Annual Giving results through data analysis and reporting to provide updates both internally and for fundraising volunteers; oversee volunteer programs in collaboration with the Annual Giving Team, particularly focused on supporting the Annual Fund; work closely with key staff to identify and recruit donors and with key fundraising volunteers, in coordination with other members of the Advancement team; and partner with the Director of Stewardship and Events and the AVP to enhance stewardship of annual donors, especially those at the leadership level.
The Director is expected to have an appreciation for and commitment to a clearly articulated set of core departmental values established by members of the Office of College Advancement (OCA).
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree
- Experience: Three to five years of related fundraising experience; project/campaign management experience is required.
- Licenses/Certificates: Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience in supervising salaried and hourly staff.
- Experience in an annual giving program as part of a comprehensive campaign.
- Experience with day of giving platforms and social media integration initiatives
- Master’s degree.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and successful experience with annual fundraising campaigns.
- Experience with staff and/or volunteer management and the ability to supervise, develop and mentor direct reports.
- Demonstrated effectiveness of verbal and written communication, including the ability to give presentations and interact with diverse populations through a variety of media and means.
- Ability to think creatively, critically, and strategically in planning, executing, and evaluating programs and events.
- Ability to work effectively with all College constituencies.
- Ability to exercise independence in undertaking responsibilities.
- Strong organizational skills and proven ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities, and statistical analyses.
- Possess excellent quantitative skills and a strong ability to analyze, interpret, and present data in a compelling and strategic manner.
- Ability to manage budgets, analyze program costs, and provide timely reports.
- Strong knowledge of social networking and web applications and strategies.
- Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of the diverse Advancement team in support of OCA goals and values and the College’s strategic vision.
- Ability to work weekends/evenings and travel as needed.
- Respect for high standards and the maintenance of confidential information.
Other:
Hours: The regular office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; requires some evening and weekend hours plus regional and national travel.
Classification and Status: This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
Reporting: Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development.
