Assistant Director, Direct Marketing, University Annual Giving
The University of Virginia’s Office of Engagement seeks an Assistant Director, Direct Marketing for the University Annual Giving team. The incumbent will serve as a project manager tasked with increasing philanthropic support to the University and partners through print, digital, and newly emerging technologies. The ideal candidate is organized, process-driven, has strong written and verbal communication skills, and thrives in a collaborative environment.
The Assistant Director is responsible for executing the strategic vision established by the Director for Direct Marketing. The Assistant Director will build emails in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, compile print collateral, communicate with partners as needed, develop timelines for production, manage vendor relationships, and coordinate the efforts of in-house staff including writers, graphic designers, and a data team.
The University Annual Giving team plays an integral and strategic role within University Advancement. This team works cross-functionally, producing donor-centric direct marketing strategies and creative output leading to growth in philanthropic support to the University. The Assistant Director role is eligible for either a remote or hybrid office setting.
Responsibilities Include:
- Develop a production timeline of annual giving projects with tasks, deadlines and individual assignments.
- Build and schedule emails in Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Review and maintain custom giving forms through GiveCampus.
- Compile and distribute print communications in conjunction with external vendors.
- Coordinate production with internal partners including writers, graphic designers, and a data team to ensure on-time delivery of appeals and stewardship. Prepare and schedule digital communications.
- Manage vendor relationships.
- Report results of solicitations to leadership and partners in pre-determined timeframes.
- Provide excellent customer service to constituents and partners.
- Collaborate with team members to review and analyze project results and make recommendations for strategy enhancements.
- Assist in developing and implementing A/B testing strategies to increase dollars and donors.
- Coordinate with team members to provide appropriate audience segmentation and solicitation performance updates on a mutually agreed upon schedule, based on milestones and partner needs.
- Collaborate with team members and partners on content and format that incorporates annual giving best practices.
- Participate in Office of Engagement, Annual Giving, and Advancement Community meetings, events, and programs as needed.
- Attend training opportunities to further knowledge of the University, development and fundraising.
- Keep abreast of best practices for annual giving direct marketing.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field
- A minimum of one year of experience in one or more of the following: fundraising, alumni relations, non-profit, project management, communications, or sales/marketing
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- An understanding of marketing principles
- Highly effective project management skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage and meet complex deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Sales Force Marketing Cloud and/or GiveCampus
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Strong proficiency working with personal computers and related hardware/software
- Understanding of the principles of philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management
- Knowledge of marketing and communications best practices
- Experience with digital communications
- Experience with video editing
- Relationship management skills

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,000 – $55,000 commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
