Job Summary:

The Director of Planned Giving is a member of the development team responsible for the overall planned giving fundraising plan for the institution. This includes the establishment and implementation of the planned giving strategic plans, policies, and goals. The director will have direct donor cultivation responsibilities and support colleague development officers with the promotion of planned gifts such as bequests, annuities, insurance, and real estate.

Job Scope:

Support the University Advancement Division by serving as the Director of Planned Giving in a performance-oriented culture. 

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Developing strategies for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of planned giving prospects
  • Actively managing a portfolio of major / planned gift prospects and donors for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Partnering with the AVP and VP of Advancement and overall team to integrate planned giving activities into department fundraising efforts
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of planned giving initiatives and activities
  • Mentoring staff and facilitating/providing planned giving training as required
  • Developing strategies to aggressively market the planned giving program
  • Lead evolvement of the Heritage Club (the university’s recognition society for alumni and friends with confirmed planned gifts) and the stewardship of its members
  • Potentially serve as a development liaison to an academic/departmental unit or college

  • Ability to effectively develop and implement operational, tactical, and strategic plans
  • Providing for on-going promotion of planned giving opportunities; overseeing, managing and/or planning advancement events
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability and personality to work collaboratively, accept responsibility, and motivate colleagues, volunteers, and donors
  • Experience in securing outright, major and planned gifts
  • Demonstrated success in activities to coordinate, attract, and close major gift funding for a university or other non-profit organization, including face-to-face solicitation of major gifts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership, delegation, and teamwork skills
  • Sound judgment and integrity
  • Ensure compliance with governmental and University policies and regulations
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to try new approaches and take appropriate risks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years of professional experience in development, preferably within a university or other complex not-for-profit environment
  • Record of successful major and planned gifts fundraising
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • This position requires travel and a willingness to work weekends and evenings as necessary
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with the internet, social media, word processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree and / or CFRE
  • Five or more years of professional experience in development, preferably within a university or other complex not-for-profit environment
