Director of Alumni Engagement
Position Purpose
In support of Dartmouth’s Alumni Relations mission, the Director of Alumni Engagement provides program leadership to engage volunteers and build connection between alumni and the College. Plans and implements reunions, volunteer weekends, virtual trainings and briefings, communications, and other initiatives with a goal of enhancing volunteer leadership and strengthening support for institutional priorities. Partners strategically with Advancement colleagues to support the multifaceted goals of Reunions and other initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 7+ years of experience in alumni relations or the equivalent
- Staff and volunteer management experience, ability to lead through change, motivate and inspire staff and volunteers
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to influence diverse constituencies
- Demonstrated initiative, creative energy, and ability to manage complex projects or events
- Analytical and strategic thinking capabilities with strong planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to articulate the purposes and programs of Dartmouth to individuals and groups.
- Maturity, intelligence and professionalism that earn the respect of colleagues
- Collaborator who works well as part of a team
- Experience employing technology and data analytics to optimize volunteer engagement
- Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment
- Willingness to travel, work nights and weekends
Key Accountabilities
- Provides strategy, direction, and oversight for Dartmouth reunions, in partnership with colleagues from the Dartmouth College Fund and Advancement events. Advises, coaches, and supports reunion committees and volunteers (25%)
- Develops and executes plans for volunteer gatherings, including the annual volunteer officer leadership conference and other virtual and in-person trainings and briefings. Partners closely on execution of Alumni Council meetings (20%)
- Working closely with the Deputy Director, creates communications targeted to volunteers. Supports volunteer groups with communications resources and best practices, including managing the class newsletter program (10%)
- Serves as a strategic lead on focused projects that may involve the creation of new initiatives or improvement of existing ones that, through both broad outreach and selective targeting, offer alumni access to a wide-range of resources at the College in ways that enrich their intellectual, professional and personal lives (10%)
- Works in various aspects of alumni relations developing relationships and communications that affect the perception of the College held by alumni. Communicates with alumni, volunteers, senior administration, faculty, and trustees to execute engagement strategies. (10%)
- Develops strong and effective relationships and partnerships with colleagues across campus. Fosters strong relationships with alumni by engaging them in the life of the institution and with one another. Provides updates on College mission and vision through informal networking. Participates in creating a strong and enduring culture of volunteerism at Dartmouth and takes full advantage of Dartmouth’s extraordinary community of graduates and all that they have to offer. Considers approaches to reach out to under-represented constituents, including international constituents, people of color, women, widows, parents and similar audiences (10%)
- Strategically and administratively manages staff. Provides regular and ad hoc management of assistant directors, alumni volunteers, student interns, and temporary help for specific programs (10%)
- Develops and evaluates annual budgets necessary to support alumni engagement activities (5%)
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
