Director of Development
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives (VPASI), the Director of Development will assist the VPASI in the implementation of a comprehensive strategy for increasing charitable gifts to the university, with a major focus on planning, implementing, and managing capital campaigns and assisting with the annual fund including personal capital campaign and annual fund raising calls. Responsibilities will include active involvement in prospect development, stewardship activities, enlisting and supporting volunteers, and making personal calls on selected prospects. Oversees on-going operations of the development office.
Major Responsibilities/Activities
Essential Functions:
- Assists the Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives (VPASI) in implementing the Strategic Development Plan of the University of Saint Francis by assisting in the planning and implementation of goals and the work program of Institutional Advancement.
- Conducts research to identify annual gift prospects and obtains information concerning their financial capability, special interests, past history and current connections with the institution, close friends and advisors, and financial contributions to other causes.
- Determines to whom prospects are assigned for solicitation (such as the University President, the trustees, development staff, key volunteers, other top administrators or him/herself).
- Personally “manages” assigned gift prospects, including identification and research, cultivation, solicitation, and recognition.
- Helps insure that excellent maintenance of pertinent information for assigned past and prospective donors to the university, including names and addresses, is being conducted.
- Maintains frequent contact with assigned donors and prospective donors.
- Assists as needed in the planning and implementation of other campus projects and events, as necessary (such as: groundbreakings, new building dedications, celebrations of athletic championships, etc.).
- Attends meetings and represents the University at events as requested.
- Communicates both verbally and in writing with various university constituents including administrators, faculty, students, other support staff and individuals in the community
- Attends in-services as directed to update knowledge and skills
- Adheres to University of Saint Francis and departmental Quality Service Standards and Expectations
- Consistently demonstrates behaviors and attitudes congruent with the University of Saint Francis and the Franciscan Values.
- Participates in various community and professional organizations as a representative of the university.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years fundraising experience preferably in a college or university setting required.
- Experience with databases, capital and annual campaigns, and various forms of giving required.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrates honesty and integrity and loyalty to the university and be supportive of its mission and religious affiliation.
- Demonstrates optimism, persistency, and diplomacy
- Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.
- Must be highly organized and familiar with short and long-term planning processes
- Requires excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates ability to relate and interact with a wide spectrum of groups and individuals.
- Must be able to implement university plans
- Demonstrates skills in the use of computer programs particularly word processing, database management, communications and spreadsheet programs.
- Must be, and remain, insurable for driving by the university’s automobile insurance company without additional premiums.
