Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

  • Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Three (3) years of full-time fundraising experience.
  • Proven track record of success in cultivating, soliciting, and raising $1,000+ gifts from individual donors or organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Four (4) or more years of experience cultivating, soliciting, and closing $1,000+ gifts. Experience in Higher Education fundraising. Experience working for an Annual Fund or Annual Giving Team. Experience developing and implementing a giving program. Supervisory management experience. Proficient in database or contact management software (i.e. Raiser’s Edge). Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google products.

Brief Description of Duties:

University Advancement seeks an experienced fundraising professional for its Development Officer, Leadership Annual Giving position. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Annual Fund, the Development Officer will work closely with development staff to build the University’s philanthropic pipeline through meaningful cultivation of leadership donors. The Development Officer will play a key role in integrating leadership giving into all areas of University Advancement including Stony Brook Medicine. The selected candidate will have excellent communication skills. A successful candidate will have the Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments and take responsibility for outcomes. They will be persistent, results oriented, and professional.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Manage a portfolio of individuals capable of making gifts of $1,000 to $100,000. Responsible for moving these prospects efficiently and effectively through all stages of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship by developing appropriate individual strategies.
  • Meeting clearly defined annual metrics, including 130 face-to-face visits, 180 substantive contacts, and a dollar goal based on tenure, portfolio, and opportunity.
  • Work with the Executive Director of Annual Giving to develop a strategy for growing leadership gift outcomes through communications, direct mail solicitation, telefund program and event fundraising.
  • Successfully manage an entry level front line team of 2-3 Project Support Specialists, each are charged with making 200 face-to-face annual giving qualification/solicitation visits per fiscal year.
  • Leverage Stony Brook Giving Day to secure leadership level support for matching gift and donor participation challenges
  • Serve as a visible and proactive leader of the university’s leadership annual giving efforts
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues, donors, and staff
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Donor Relations to ensure appropriate stewardship of leadership donors.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Prospect Research and Management to funnel qualified major gift candidates to the appropriate directors of development.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations team members to develop leadership annual giving strategies for reunions and events
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. The ability to travel frequently to meet with donors will be required.
