The Jill Sherman Annual Giving Coordinator
Haverford College seeks to hire a full-time, exempt, benefit eligible Annual Giving Coordinator. This position was created in the fall of 2007, and named to honor former Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Jill Sherman, who helped the College raise $200 million in the Educating to Lead, Educating to Serve Campaign (1997-2004).
In honoring Jill’s management beliefs and practices, this position places an emphasis on expanded opportunities for professional development and training. Such opportunities may include: attendance at professional conferences, travel with senior development professionals within Institutional Advancement (IA), partnership with non-Annual Giving teams within IA, and exposure to volunteer leadership committees at Haverford.
The primary responsibilities of the Jill Sherman Annual Giving Coordinator include the Student Advancement Officer Program, the Undergraduate Education program, the Senior Class Gift initiative, management of the youngest alumni classes, and strategic oversight of the IA social media effort. These efforts will ultimately assist in the enhancement of the donor pipeline for current and future comprehensive campaigns.
Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
- In partnership with the Director of Annual Giving and the entire Annual Giving team, help to create alumni, parent, and friend fundraising strategies aimed to raise $5.8 million and grow the number of alumni donors in FY20.
- Manage the Student Advancement Officer Program, which includes phonathon, texting, and personal emails by:
- Recruiting, training, and managing of student workers to serve as fundraising ambassadors for the College to secure support toward Annual Giving donor and dollar goals,
- Lead the redesign of the phonathon program by developing plans for implementation and evaluation of a streamlined program, which includes approximately 8-weeks of calling in the fall and a more focused spring effort, including the testing and utilization of text messages,
- Partner with the annual giving team to identify opportunities for personal outreach, primarily via email and/or text messages, from the Student Advancement Officers,
- Designing segmentation plans for outreach in close partnership with Advancement Services in order to more efficiently and effectively use time and resources, and
- Analyzing results in order to fully understand how student advancement officer outreach can be optimized to secure philanthropic support.
- Oversee the Undergraduate Education program, Senior Class Gift Program, and manage the transition of graduating seniors into the alumni community by:
- Developing and implementing creative and forward-thinking opportunities to educate students about the impact philanthropic support has had on the Haverford community, which should include a student focused educational event in each semester (eg. Thank A Donor Day, Tag a Donor Day, etc.),
- Creating, energizing, and training a large and diverse Senior Class Gift committee 9-12 months prior to Commencement (with at least two committee chairs) that is charged with making peer-to-peer solicitations, engaging and stewarding classmates, and setting and achieving dollar and participation goals,
- Educating graduating students about ways to stay involved with the College,
- Ensuring that the College has their most up-to-date contact information,
- Partnering with Alumni and Parent Relations to offer regional Welcome to the City events, and
- Developing and implementing a focused communications strategy for use between Commencement and their first appeal as members of the alumni community (e.g. Alumni Customs).
- Maintain primary responsibility for growing and supporting Giving Advocates in the four most recent graduating classes (up to but excluding the 5th Reunion):
- Building a robust network of College volunteers with a primary focus on engaging young alumni as Giving Advocates,
- Ensuring that Giving Advocates are using the Volunteer Management System for solicitation outreach, and
- Appropriately stewarding and thanking volunteers for their work.
- Design an innovative social media strategy, in partnership with College Communications, to bolster engagement and fundraising for all alumni and specifically targeting young alumni. Connect current students and young alumni with the College through various social media vehicles including but not limited to Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Assist execution of postings by students and other colleagues as required, particularly during Family and Friends Weekend and Alumni Weekend.
- Other duties as assigned, including special event participation and/or management, cultivation/solicitation/stewardship support, and/or prospect management, in accordance with the overall goals of the Annual Giving and all departments within Institutional Advancement.
Line of Report: The Jill Sherman Annual Giving Coordinator reports to the Director of Annual Giving, and has no direct reports.
Education, Training, & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Phonathon experience expected
- Driver’s License required
- Strong oral and written communication skills required
- Must be organized, versatile, and a self-starter
- Ability to be a team player in a fast-paced environment is a must
- Must work well with undergraduates, understanding their schedule and time constraints
- Extensive evening and some weekend work required
