Assistant Director of the Sweet Briar Fund

The Assistant Director will assist the Director of the Sweet Briar Fund in designing and implementing a comprehensive annual giving plan for the Sweet Briar Fund. The position is responsible for implementing engagement, cultivation and solicitation of key constituencies for participation in the Sweet Briar Fund and will engage donors and friends with the mission of Sweet Briar College.

Essential Responsibilities:

Fundraising:

  • In collaboration with the Director, establish partnerships with leaders of constituencies, especially alumnae class leaders, preparing students for class leadership and including individual solicitation of these leaders to help drive participation.
  • Implement direct mail strategies in collaboration with the Director of Development Communications and Data Analytics.
  • Pull reports for alumnae and student class giving and distribute to class leaders according to a monthly and semi-monthly schedule.
  • Lead solicitation strategies and help to educate young alumnae, students, and staff about the importance of philanthropy and the Sweet Briar Fund.
  • Plan and execute the annual Alumnae Volunteer Leadership Conference.

Student Philanthropy:

  • Identify and cultivate student volunteers for Philanthropy Day.
  • Develop and implement Philanthropy Week activities and events.
  • Identify and cultivate student volunteer solicitors for the Senior Legacy Project.
  • Develop and implement Senior Legacy Project fundraising and celebration event. 

Communications:

  • In collaboration with the Director and Director of Development Communications and Data Analytics, create a communications strategy for the Sweet Briar Fund, including solicitation letters for various constituencies
  • Pull and create email distribution lists for email communications.
  • Coordinate the processing of in-house solicitation letters in coordination with administrative staff and student workers.
  • Develop and implement monthly class leader presentations.
  • Manage and implement texting outreach for fundraising to constituents.
  • Update and maintain related web pages.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: 2+ years in development-related work with a college, university, school or other nonprofit
  • Excellent persuasive, oral, and written abilities
  • High attention to details

  • Belief in the importance of philanthropy to fulfill the mission of Sweet Briar College;
  • Collaborative spirit to unify and strengthen the concept of “One Sweet Briar;”
  • Understanding of women’s philanthropy;
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of volunteer leadership;
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical abilities;
  • Ability to meet goals and deadlines;
  • Ability to use (or willingness to learn to use) Banner software and related office technologies, Adobe Photoshop, Canva, and InDesign;
  • Experience planning and implementing social media campaigns; and
  • Responsive to constituencies with effective communication and email management.
