The Associate Director, Direct Marketing is an essential member of the Annual Giving team in the Office of University Advancement at William & Mary. W&M has the highest alumni participation rate among public institutions and the Annual Giving division is responsible for leading the annual giving function for schools and units across W&M, advancing philanthropy through strategic engagement with students and alumni, from senior class gift, through 50th reunion and beyond.

The Associate Director, Direct Marketing reports to the Director of Direct Marketing and is responsible for the planning, execution, and improvement of direct marketing initiatives with the goal of furthering the W&M mission through meaningful communication with students and alumni. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director to develop strategy and contribute to the creation of annual program projections and team objectives.

The Associate Director will work closely with colleagues and partners to develop innovative strategies and deliver direct marketing fundraising services for constituent area programs. They will support the improvement of processes by recommending changes and enhancements to maximize program potential. The Associate Director’s data management responsibilities include developing and tracking metrics, as well as analyzing data to adjust direct marketing strategies as needed for the entire direct marketing team. They will act as the team lead for data analysis and digital & segmentation strategy across all channels for W&M annual giving. In addition, the Associate Director will be directly responsible for executing high-touch and high-caliber projects that drive engagement with our most loyal W&M alumni and donor population.

The successful Associate Director, Direct Marketing will demonstrate a balance of strong analytical and project management skills as well as a creative aptitude. The Associate Director, Direct Marketing will be a proactive, collaborative, and innovative member of this dynamic team and a champion for diversity and equity, finding innovative ways to incorporate diverse perspectives into all aspects of their work as William & Mary builds on past success and continues planning for its next campaign, This is a hybrid position based in Williamsburg, Virginia, that offers a flexible work environment.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Several years of experience in direct marketing, fundraising or digital marking or equivalent combination of education and experience (typically 4+ years.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.
  • Experience in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, donor/constituent database systems and marketing automation platforms.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills to include follow-through and managing multiple projects in a deadline driven environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyze data, extract meaningful conclusions and report findings.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills including proofreading and editing documents.
  • Understanding the power of philanthropy in higher education and the impact it has on the future of higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in marketing and/or fundraising in a complex environment is highly preferred.
  • Experience planning and implementing integrated direct marketing campaigns, analyzing results and sharing key take-aways.
  • A practiced understanding of generating reports and manipulating data is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with database applications and CRM systems.
  • Advanced skills in Excel, Tableau, Power BI, or any other data visualization tools.
