Valparaiso University is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Vice President for Development to join our senior leadership team. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Advancement, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing planned giving, principal giving, major gifts, annual giving, and stewardship.

This role is essential to the overall performance of the advancement division, and we are looking for a dedicated professional who can effectively manage and grow our fundraising initiatives, including the oversight of an upcoming comprehensive campaign.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including planned giving, principal giving, major gifts, annual giving, and stewardship
  • Lead and manage the upcoming comprehensive campaign, ensuring its success and alignment with the university’s strategic goals
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors and potential donors, ensuring their engagement and commitment to the university
  • Oversee the development team, providing guidance, support, and direction to ensure the achievement of fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with university leadership to identify funding needs and opportunities
  • Develop and manage the development department’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources
  • Monitor and report on fundraising activities and progress, providing regular updates to the Vice President for Advancement and the senior leadership team
  • Serve as a thought partner with the Vice President for Advancement in developing goals and strategies for development and the Advancement team
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations related to fundraising and non-profit management
  • Represent the university at various events, meetings, and conferences, promoting our mission and fundraising initiatives.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in fundraising, with a proven track record of success in higher education
  • Experience in leading and managing comprehensive campaigns
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of fundraising laws and regulations
  • Ability to travel as needed
