Job Description

This position works directly with one or more colleges or schools to build and lead a comprehensive development program with a focus on major gifts to support University’s initiatives and the college/school.

Essential Functions

  • Carries a portfolio of agreed upon number of major gift prospects capable of making significant gift commitments over a five-year pledge period or through estate commitments. A secondary but significant focus on annual, one-time gifts that will be necessary to support the ongoing college operations. Portfolio may be a combination of individual, corporate, foundation, alumni and/or community-based prospects.
  • To make an agreed upon number of quality discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and/or stewardship contacts monthly with portfolio prospects. Calls may be solo, with the president, dean, faculty members, vice president for university advancement or volunteers such as external advisory council members. Such calls could also include meetings set up as solo calls by the President, Dean, a faculty member, Vice President for Advancement or a volunteer. Involves school development advisory council members who can help in closing major gifts and opening doors to new prospects.
  • To develop or assist in developing written or visual materials as may be required to showcase and promote programs, outcomes/accomplishments, and goals of the college insofar as they relate directly to development efforts, and most especially to the major gift’s focus. These may include written, formal proposals, brochures, slide shows or videos, and any other materials that may help with the effort. Required to submit an agreed upon number of proposals per month.
  • To work with the dean to help identify and recruit members of the external advisory council for the college and to work directly with members to identify and help cultivate and or solicit other prospects; and also, to work with council members to solicit their own philanthropic support.
  • This position formally reports directly to the Executive Director of Corporate Foundation Relations.
  • Position requires significant travel, mostly local and statewide, occasionally national travel and some overnight stays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Three (3) years of successful fundraising experience or experience in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience in fundraising, marketing, public relations, alumni, or related field, and keen knowledge of university operations and programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Successfully integrate the fundraising goals and objectives of UT Tyler with the goals of the donor.
  • Ability to strategically to successfully negotiate with individuals and groups, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex gift scenarios, and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-based setting and to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to set and complete goals.
  • Comfort in researching and analyzing large groups of data to uncover planned giving prospects.
  • Ability to work across the University with administrative and academic leadership, trustees, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience in developing strategies for prospects with excellent follow-through
