Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Director of Annual Giving, the Associate Director of Annual Giving will be a critical member of the Annual Giving team. The Annual Giving Team dual reports to University Advancement and U Alumni and supports large university-wide events and initiatives such as U Giving Day, Homecoming, Founders Day, Grad Season, and more. This position will provide direct supervision and leadership to our phone program, develop a student philanthropy strategy, and enhance and carry out annual giving data operations efforts. 
 
The AD will be charged with sustaining and improving current efforts and creating new strategies to influence the team’s overall success in the areas of phone/text/video message solicitations, donor retention and upgrade, and student engagement/philanthropy.  This role directly supervises one full-time Student Philanthropy Center Manager and is responsible for a student team of 40 – 55 students throughout the year. 
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Develop and oversee the university-wide telephone/texting/video solicitation plan within the University of Utah’s decentralized development structure.
  • Work closely with individual colleges and units to coordinate SPEC appeal efforts throughout the year for alums, donors, parents, and faculty/staff giving.   
  • Directly supervise an Annual Giving Student Philanthropy Center Manager who is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the university’s Student Philanthropy Center with primary responsibility for running the SPEC program.
  • Responsible for helping the SPEC manager hire, train, and retain a student work force of 40 – 55 employees.
  • Maintain the Annual Giving Shared Outlook Inbox, be responsive to donors and internal partners. Respond with a custom service lens.
  • Submit and manage data requests for SPEC and other Annual Giving needs, such as first-time donors, anniversary, texting campaigns, and more. Help clean data and get it ready for calling, texting, emailing, and mail fields.
  • Implement at least twice a year a campaign for data clean-up. Focus on alumni and donors to collect their preferred contact information and methods. Run campaigns through text, email, calling, social media, web ads, etc.
  • Manage and track the SPEC fulfillment process, including reports and channels for fulfillment: email, text, calling, and mail. 
  • Help recruit and support the U Giving Day Student Committee. Work with students Sept. – April to plan student engagement and giving events such as philanthropy fair, trivia, Swoop Search, etc.
  • Work with the Director of Annual Giving to manage campus collaboration, reporting, and planning.
  • In collaboration with the Student Alumni Board and MUSS Board, develop a campus-wide student philanthropy strategy based on best practice, focusing on efforts to engage and educate current students about the impact of philanthropy on campus.  This strategy should also include a student giving component.
  • Responsibly use professional development resources to stay current on best practices and trends within annual giving.
  • Following the purchasing guidelines of the university, manages the biding and selection process of external vendors working on behalf of Annual Giving’s for student philanthropy efforts. Manages partnerships with external vendors to ensure desired and agreed upon expectations are met.
  • Develop and oversee sections of the Annual Giving fiscal year budget, such as the Student Philanthropy and Engagement Center and caller wages. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, related field, or equivalency; three years of fund-raising experience which includes direct solicitation of contributions, volunteer leadership support, written and verbal presentations, and strategy and market development are required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Pay Rate Posting: $65,000 – $72,000
