The Cornell University Lab of Ornithology is seeking a Membership Data Analyst to join the Membership and Development teams. Bridging the Lab’s science and conservation resources with the public’s broad-ranged interests in birds and the natural world, the Membership and Development teams use offline and online communications to deepen connections to the Lab and grow the base of support to feed a growing major and planned gift program.

The Membership Data Analyst plays a leadership role in the department, guiding the team in discovering ways to streamline existing processes which will contribute to the department’s overall net gains.

We are looking for a candidate who is analytical and curious. We would love to find someone who can look objectively at a problem, collect data, and analyze an issue from all sides before coming to a conclusion, and then provide strategic solutions. The successful candidate will organize and manage a variety of data-related projects, and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to provide data that supports fundraising goals. This role reports to the Director of Membership and Annual Giving.

What You Will Do

As the Membership Data Analyst, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Serve as an authority on membership and annual giving data; design data collection and recommend effective alternative solutions to meet desired reporting options; provide analysis and guidance to department in collaboration with external agencies and technical counterparts.
  • Use Blackbaud NXT, Engaging Networks, and JCA reporting database to analyze and segment audiences, optimize data entry processes, find automated solutions, and complete fundraising campaign-specific data functions.
  • Build and refine queries, data exports, marketing and transaction reports and tracking systems for all direct response fundraising campaigns.
  • Develop and implement data tracking systems and support quality controls for a high functioning data entry/customer service Membership Services team.
  • Supervise individual responsible for importing/exporting lists and provide training for processes.

This position located at the Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Preference is for location in the Ithaca area; however, a remote worksite within New York State may be considered. Worksite arrangements are subject to change to accommodate business needs.

What We Need from You

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years relevant data management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A thorough understanding of data processes including import, export and validation is essential, as well as experience with meeting program goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and translate marketing and communication goals to database setup and systems development;
  • Ability to communicate well with internal constituents and the public.
  • Must be self-motivated, team player and able to work independently, and be equally capable of working with the supervisor to prioritize projects and to regularly communicate status and progress.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and motivation for continual database refinement and improvement.

We would view these additional qualifications as incredibly helpful in this role:

  • 5+ years as Raisers Edge or Blackbaud NXT lead or administrator role.
  • Extensive experience with CRM systems.
  • Familiarity with and ability to manipulate data between databases
  • Knowledge of SQL and Access.
  • Quick learner, good listener, solution-oriented and a keen eye for detail all a plus.
  • Comfortable with multiple priorities.
  • Familiarity with Agile sprint systems.
