The University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking an Assistant Director of Annual Giving & Special Projects (AGO2). The Assistant Director of Annual Giving & Special Projects assists in the development and coordination of annual giving solicitation activities that include cultivating relationships with donors, alumni, grateful patients, residents/fellows, medical families, and/or University/school friends. In this role, the Assistant Director of Annual Giving & Special Projects helps coordinate fundraising activities, donation websites, marketing projects, and mail, phone, texting, and email solicitation programs for the University of Maryland School of Medicine for both unrestricted and restricted needs. This position plays an important role in the day-to-day operations of the Annual Giving unit and is expected to contribute to the giving team, as guided.

This is a Hybrid Position (Partial Telework Allowed)

Primary Duties: 

  • Plan and coordinate annual funds or alumni campaigns at all levels of annual giving donors or alumni. These campaigns and plans include annual giving metrics that are comprised of: total $’s raised; total number of activities; participation of targeted prospects and donors; number of new donors/prospects acquired; number of new donors/prospects at leadership level; total number of appeals.
    • Drafting and editing content for appeals, brochures, online donation pages, and other fundraising and marketing materials.
    • Transcribing interviews for appeals stories, culling content.
    • Prepping lists for appeals. Create and refresh solicitation lists as needed across all channels. Conduct quality checks to ensure lists include all information needed for each appeal, as well as the accuracy of the data.
    • Digital Fundraising
      • Constant Contact – lead administrator for this platform. Setting up donation messages and uploading lists, photos, and other materials for e-appeals and other messages. Pulling reports on outcomes of appeals.
      • Social media – Assist with online and offline fundraising efforts.
      • Texting campaigns – drafting messages, prepping lists, sending messages and follow-ups.
      • Understanding of current fundraising trends, direct mail, crowdfunding, social media, mobile, and digital acquisition.
    • Merging, printing, stuffing in-house appeals materials.
    • Phonathons – working with central office to prepare materials, working with students who call, staffing two nights (of three) of Phonathon.
    • Anniversary of last gift appeals – pulling lists, merging cards, signing, and sending each month.
    • New donor packet – pulling lists, working with mail house to send letter with magnets each month.
    • Assist in creating a recurring gift program (monthly donors).
    • Improve response rates and increase donor retention.
  • Formulate and execute effective communication and marketing materials and solicitation activities within specific market segments identified as having potential for the greatest growth, including creating and editing of all solicitation appeals. Online giving.
    • GiveCampus – will be co-administrator for this platform.
    • GiveCorps – will learn how to use program but will be shifting to GiveCampus.
    • Social Media
    • Drafting and posting content for social media for fundraising initiatives, including to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
    • Photoshoots – assist in coordinating bi-annual Office of Development photoshoots that take place over three days in a variety of locations with dozens of people including the Dean, faculty, staff, and students.
    • Quarterly planned giving ad – provides periodic assistance in drafting/editing text for ad.
    • SOM News Philanthropy bi-monthly ads – assists in drafting/editing text.
    • Patient “Engage” cards and Faculty Bio cards – drafting/editing content provided by department and/or development officers.
    • Creating appeal timelines for requested appeals.
    • Photoshop – editing photos for appeals and donation pages. Reviewing weekly gift reports to make sure appeal codes are properly added. Sending changes and corrections for processing.
  • Execute strategic initiatives that may have internal or external impact and establish giving direction. Responsible for short- and long-term goal planning for the annual giving, alumni program, and marketing.
  • Prepare routine reports on annual giving trends, donor participation, and fundraising costs, and analyze data for use in goal setting and planning, and for building strategies for the future.
  • Participate in planning meetings, accept special assignments, assist colleagues, and provide support for all ongoing programs and operations, as needed.
  • Assist in the solicitation of high-end annual giving donors, alumni, or grateful patients and renew at increasingly higher levels, and expand the number of donors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: Three (3) years of development experience in annual giving, phone-a-thons, alumni relations, special events, or fundraising, or higher education development experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Design experience suggested but not required.
  • Familiarity with advancement database systems (Ellucian CRM Advance) a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office programs, especially MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong customer service orientation and the ability to maintain collaborative and collegial working relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders, recognizing that the functions of this role are integral to the achievement of annual giving’s goals and objectives.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Excellent organizational skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail.

Hiring Range: Mid 60’s to 70’s (Commensurate with education and experience).
