Assistant Director, Next Generation Philanthropy
The University of Virginia Office of Engagement seeks an Assistant Director, Next Generation Philanthropy to join the University Annual Giving team. Under the Associate Director, Next Generation Philanthropy, the Assistant Director will develop and execute an omnichannel (e-mail, phone, social, text, video) strategy for UVA students to engage alumni, friends, and families philanthropically through giving, stewardship, and education.
The Assistant Director, Next Generation Philanthropy manages this engagement by 50+ students at UVA (Cavalier Connect). Having an entrepreneurial professional empower our student fundraisers and leaders is critical to UVA’s pipeline development. The Assistant Director develops performance measures and reports results to UVA partners and University Annual Giving. The successful candidate works closely with student fundraisers, coaching them on developing efficient workflows to ensure goals are met.
The Assistant Director role follows nontraditional work hours, typically Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., with sporadic weekend work.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and guide effective student engagement and fundraising strategies.
- Transition Cavalier Connect to a multi-channel engagement software solution.
- Update Cavalier Connect partners and Associate Director, Next Generation Philanthropy on progress towards goals, including giving and touchpoints
- Work with the Analytics team on specifications for prospect pools and analysis of opportunities and progress.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Cavalier Connect software and hardware, working with internal partners and external vendors to ensure the system’s proper functioning and equipment.
- Manage Cavalier Connect communications vehicles (website, e-mail, text, etc.).
- Recruit and hire Next Generation Philanthropy student employees in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
- Oversee training that establishes clear expectations of student employees, provides an Advancement Community orientation, and an opportunity to practice skills required to solicit funds.
- Build awareness of current topics at UVA to strengthen engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience. This may include full-time employment, or any of the following: internships, externships, shadowing, volunteering with non-profit organizations, community organizations, employment as a student worker, cooperative education, field study, undergraduate research, part-time or summer jobs, leadership, and involvement in student groups in which skills that are relevant to the work of the position are developed.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse constituents.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience managing students.
- Demonstrated ability to manage partner relationships.
- Entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated success in building new ways of engagement.
- Knowledge of the principles of advancement/philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management.
- Working knowledge of database management, engagement software (ex. CampusCall, VanillaSoft, EverTrue, Hustle).
- Previous experience managing students.
- Demonstrated ability to manage partner relationships.
- Entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated success in building new ways of engagement.
- Knowledge of the principles of advancement/philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management.

Because of the close working relationship with UVA students who work in the University Advancement office, the Assistant Director is also required to work primarily in the shared office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
