Assistant Director of Development, Chancellor’s Associates

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, Student Success and Parent Program, the Assistant Director of Development, Chancellor’s Associates is responsible for delivering and overseeing the execution of a donor-centric campus campaign for Chancellor’s Associates that helps advance the mission of UC San Diego. In this role, the Assistant Director will plan and implement strategies for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding leadership, special and high-end annual gifts.

The Assistant Director will play a critical role in identifying and recruiting volunteers for the Chancellor’s Associates Council and collaborate with campus volunteers and Advancement colleagues to help strengthen a culture of philanthropy on our campus and help build a sustainable prospect and donor pipeline. In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing budget and revenue projections, as well as event and data management, and donor relations activities.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or an equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques. Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in the stewardship of potential and current donors that includes developing strategies, opportunities and recognition.
  • Ability to independently establish objectives, plan, direct, execute and evaluate all logistics of programs, special events, meetings, and receptions to strategically enhance donor stewardship. Knowledge of the principles and practices of events management. Successful negotiating skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of current management principles and practices. Demonstrated ability to develop/manage budgets. Experience with basic accounting principles to manage event and program budgets.
  • Proven ability to provide direction to staff and manage volunteers in accomplishing established goals and objectives and maintain office activities with respect to established procedures and guidelines. Demonstrated experience in effectively advising, motivating, and communicating with alumni and division staff.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze, and compile relevant information into summary or report form for the purposes of advancing university-wide development goals. Ability to track acquisition data to determine success of all recruitment events in translating prospects into donors and determining campus interests.
  • Proficiency with exporting and merging data using programs including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. Demonstrated ability to create database tracking systems to manage donor base, to design reports utilizing complex criteria and to extrapolate and analyze data.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification, avoidance, resolution, and project management skills. Creative ability to conceptualize, develop and implement programmatic activities from only very general guidelines.
  • Exceptionally strong organizational and time management skills. Detail oriented, with demonstrated ability to set priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities and take into consideration deadlines, competing requirements and complexity.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including knowledge of accepted principles and practices of marketing and proven effectiveness in speaking one-on-one and making verbal presentations. Ability to write solicitation appeals effectively.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Ability to work and excel in a team environment in the presence of multiple, frequently-shifting priorities and across functional areas.
