Medical Major Gift Officer
At WashU Medicine, we don’t just treat diseases—we redefine what’s possible in human health.
Behind every breakthrough in our labs and every life-saving treatment in our clinics is a story of generosity. We are seeking a visionary fundraiser to join us as a Medical Major Gift Officer. In this role, you aren’t just “raising money”; you are the bridge between world-class medical innovation and the philanthropists who make it possible.
The Mission
Your purpose is to accelerate the pace of discovery. You will partner with brilliant faculty, Department Chairs, and Division Chiefs to translate complex medical research into inspiring invitations for investment. By engaging with grateful patients, families, and visionary donors, you will secure the resources that allow WashU Medicine to remain at the global forefront of patient care and scientific inquiry.
The Vision for This Role
We are looking for a sophisticated relationship-builder who thrives on the “art of the possible.” You will serve as the chief fundraising strategist for your assigned departments, acting as a trusted advisor to medical leadership. Your work ensures that our clinicians and researchers have the fuel they need to tackle the world’s most challenging health crises.
Your Impact
- Architect of Opportunity: You will identify and cultivate deep relationships with individuals and families whose lives have been touched by our care, helping them find meaning through transformational giving.
- Strategic Partner: You will sit at the table with Department Chairs and Faculty, helping them articulate their “big ideas” and aligning those visions with the passions of our donor community.
- Storyteller: You will master the nuances of your assigned medical specialties, translating high-level science into a compelling case for support that resonates with donors of all backgrounds.
- Steward of Trust: You will manage a portfolio of major gift prospects ($100k+), ensuring that every donor understands the profound impact their generosity has on the future of medicine.
Who You Are
- Mission-Driven: You are fueled by the desire to improve human health and believe in the power of philanthropy to change the world.
- An Expert Communicator: You can navigate complex conversations with empathy, whether you’re speaking with a grateful family in a clinical setting or presenting a strategic plan to University leadership.
- Navigational Ace: You excel in a matrixed environment, comfortably balancing the needs of your specific departments with the broader goals of University Advancement.
- A Lifelong Learner: You have a natural curiosity for science and medicine and an eagerness to constantly refine your craft through mentorship and collaboration.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a proven track record in major gift fundraising and navigating complex donor environments.
- The “Plus” Factors: Experience in a medical school, health sciences, or higher education environment is highly preferred. Familiarity with grateful patient programs and a deep understanding of HIPAA and donor privacy is a significant advantage.
Why WashU Medicine?
You will be part of a culture that values collaboration, excellence, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. Here, your work has a direct line of sight to the lab bench and the bedside. If you are ready to lead at the intersection of compassion and innovation, we want to hear from you.
