Annual Giving Office:
The Office of Annual Giving educates alumni, families, friends, staff/faculty and current students about the importance of the six focus areas of The Whitman Fund: Greatest Need; Scholarships & Student Aid; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Internships; Sustainability and Academic Excellence. This position will collaborate with colleagues campus-wide to build a strong culture of philanthropy throughout the Whitman community.
Position Purpose:
The Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving is charged with increasing and retaining support from Whitman alumni and families through annual gifts to the College. The Assistant/Associate Director will manage the extensive volunteer program, which consists of alumni and family volunteers. The Assistant/Associate Director has primary responsibility for organizing, operating, recruiting, training, and providing logistics, materials and reports for alumni and family fundraising volunteer programs.
Hiring Salary Range:
- Successful applicants qualifying for the Assistant Director position can expect to start between $48,000 and $52,000 per year.
- Successful applicants qualifying for the Associate Director position can expect to start between $58,000 and $62,800 year.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Manage the alumni and fundraising volunteer programs, which includes:
- Recruiting and training volunteers.
- Communicating with volunteers on a monthly basis with fundraising and college updates.
- Assisting volunteers with their outreach to fellow alumni and families in soliciting gifts to The Whitman Fund.
- In conjunction with the Director of Annual Giving, create and track fundraising goals for volunteers and communicate progress with stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the Annual Giving and Alumni Relations teams to plan workshops and training sessions for the annual Volunteer Summit.
- Use, troubleshoot and train volunteers in volunteer management software.
- Maintain online volunteer resources page to help recruit, onboard and engage volunteers.
- In collaboration with the Director of Alumni Relations, plan two annual meetings of the Family Leadership Council and serve as primary liaison for the FLC Fundraising Committee.
- Integral to large Annual Giving projects, including but not limited to days of giving, Volunteer Summit, and end of fiscal year outreach.
- Assist the Director of Annual Giving in email solicitations.
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Skill in developing and implementing project plans that are longitudinal and complex in nature.
- Highly motivated self-starter who is goal oriented, has attention to detail and sticks to timelines.
- Desire and ability to actively and positively contribute to Whitman’s core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the Development and Alumni Relations Department’s values of integrity, trust, respect, collaboration, accountability and inclusion.
- Ability to learn fundraising and volunteer best practices, particularly in alumni and family giving programs while the associate director should have knowledge of volunteer best practices, particularly in alumni and family giving programs.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a focus on communicating the importance of philanthropy and alumni and family giving.
- Skill in using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and donor databases and highly adaptable to changing technologies.
- Knowledge of modern data management practices and techniques to make data driven decisions.
- Ability and commitment to support, respect and work effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to handle highly confidential information.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends and infrequent travel.
Assistant Director Qualifications:
- Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Preferred:
- One to three years of professional experience in fundraising, donor relations, public relations, or sales; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Thorough understanding of the value of a residential liberal arts and sciences education and ability to articulate that understanding.
Associate Director Qualifications:
- Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Four or more years of professional experience in fundraising, donor relations, public relations, or sales; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Preferred:
- Thorough understanding of the value of a residential liberal arts and sciences education and ability to articulate that understanding.
